Lake Saimaa, its unique nature and the rare Saimaa ringed seal have received international attention in one of Spain's best-known newspapers, La Vanguardia.
Spanish journalist Alberto Barbieri visited Puumala in the heart of Finland's Lake Saimaa region and joined local guide Arto Keinänen for a seal watching tour aboard the electric boat Lady of the Lake.
The experience became part of a beautiful travel story published by La Vanguardia on 7 October 2026.

Discovering the Saimaa ringed seal with a local guide
Guide Arto has been taking visitors into the Saimaa archipelago to discover its nature and wildlife since 2008.
LakelandGTE's small-group seal watching tours take guests into the natural habitat of the Saimaa ringed seal, one of the world's rarest seals.
The quiet electric Ecoboat makes it possible to experience the lake with minimal noise and emissions. Along the way, Arto shares stories about the seals, Lake Saimaa, local life and Finnish nature.
Seeing a seal can never be guaranteed – they are wild animals living freely in their natural environment. But discovering Saimaa with a local guide is an experience in itself.
Welcome to Puumala and Lake Saimaa
We are delighted that La Vanguardia has introduced Lake Saimaa and our special corner of Finland to its readers in Spain and around the world.
If the story inspires you to visit Finland, come and experience Saimaa for yourself.
Perhaps a Saimaa ringed seal will come and say hello too. 🦭
Welcome aboard!
